Some of the world’s most sought-after food delivery apps, like Uber Eats, Glovo, Takeaway.com, Deliveroo, and Just Eat Takeaway, today have become industry household names.

The concept of a delivery app is pretty straightforward: you look for a dish you’d like to eat, you order it from a restaurant - or ghost kitchen - and you wait until it’s delivered. Major food-ordering players like the ones mentioned above span dozens of countries and/or cities, listing tens of thousands of restaurants to order from.

But with a market that’s still growing year by year, it’s no wonder that there are countless other food delivery startups everywhere that are trying their luck, as well.

In 2018, for instance, Wolt, a Finnish food delivery platform that had been offering its services in Scandinavia until then, expanded across Croatia, the Czech Republic, Norway, Hungary, Georgia, and Poland, among other countries. And just a year later, it launched in Serbia, Greece, Slovakia, and Azerbaijan, stating it would expand even further by 2020.

Europe's food delivery wars

The Wolt example is no exception - all across Europe, food delivery services are trying to get a finger in as many pies as possible, capitalizing on the ever-increasing demand: by 2023, platform-to-consumer delivery will be the leading category with revenues of $82 billion, with Europe accounting for $7,897 million of that number.

In 2019, Europe’s top 5 countries in terms of platform-to-consumer revenue were the UK ($2,061 million by 2023), Germany (377 million), France (941 million), Spain (430 million) and Italy (391 million).

For restaurants, it pays off to team up with multiple of these third-party delivery platforms in order to reach different audiences and market segments. From a consumer point of view, the large variety of food delivery apps available is an advantage, as well, giving them a range of options, restaurant types and cuisines to choose from.

With the number of delivery players on the rise, we set out to compile a list of food ordering services by country, so restaurants can make an informed decision before signing up with one or more of them.

Let’s begin with Europe, a continent that’s a melting pot of cultures, traditions, languages and cuisines - the latter of which is reflected in the diversified offerings spread across dozens of food delivery apps like FoodHub, Restomalin, Bolt Food, Menu, Eda, and many more.
