Food delivery and off-premise dining are more popular than ever. A crazy year for the restaurant industry saw this trend accelerate even faster to record the biggest growth in the industry.

This means that many restaurants in the US, Canada, and Downunder are new to delivery, or are expanding their off-premise offerings.

Many are already familiar with the biggest names in food delivery – the likes of Uber Eats, DoorDash, Just Eat and Deliveroo have become household names. But in some markets, these platforms aren’t available, and in any case, restaurateurs are often looking for additional partners.

The more delivery partners you can get on board with, the larger the market you can reach and the more potential revenue you can bring in.

We’ve put together a matrix of all the platforms we can find operating in these four key markets. Read on for an overview of our findings with a link to the full matrix at the bottom of the page.

The notable food delivery platforms operating in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand

Looking at the different platforms available in these four key markets, we noticed some undeniable trends. Useful information for restaurants operating out of these countries and perhaps even straddling two or more of these markets.

Here are the main trends that we’re seeing.

Different sized markets attract different types of platforms

Looking at Statista’s projected market stats for 2021 in each country, and the coverage of different platforms, we get a big picture of how the platforms operate in each market.

The US leads the way in terms of the sheer scale of food delivery operations with a huge market of $28 billion generated by 117 million users across the whole country. With so many large cities and towns over such a huge area, the US has the biggest choice of active delivery platforms, from the biggest players in almost every city down to regional partners that cater to smaller towns and rural areas.

Canada and Australia are similar in that their large populations are spread out over a huge area. Given Canada’s $2.7 billion market of 14.5 million users and Australia’s $2.3 billion market of 9.4 million users, they are also similar in size. Both have most of the country covered by the biggest players, along with a handful of smaller platforms filling the gaps.

New Zealand is a much smaller market at $276 million from 1.4 million users. Services tend to be homegrown and operate regionally, especially in the more remote South Island. You will still find large international delivery partners in the major cities of Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch though.

Only Uber Eats and Zomato are active in all four countries

The only platforms to cover all four territories are Uber Eats and Zomato. It goes to show how difficult it is to cover such a mass of cities and towns in diverse markets.

JustEat, with the help of its various subsidiaries SkipTheDishes and Menulog, manages to cover all but the US. And DoorDash, which started with a focus on America, is now everywhere but New Zealand. A notable mention also goes to ChowNow which operates in both the US and Canada.

The US has national and regional delivery providers

Being such a large country with so many dense urban centers, the US sustains a huge number of food delivery platforms.

The US is so large in fact that there are distinct regional splits in the providers. Interestingly, this chart shows how the market share among the biggest players differs in different areas.

While DoorDash is dominant in almost every market, notably, GrubHub performs particularly well in the Northeastern states. Meanwhile, Postmates leads in LA, and Uber Eats is popular in Miami.

Looking purely at coverage, DoorDash-owned Caviar operates on the East Coast and California and in assorted cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Portland, Washington DC, Seattle, Dallas, and Fort Worth. Meanwhile, BeyondMenu picks up the slack in smaller cities like Austin, Baltimore, Sacramento, San Antonio, and more, while also serving the major urban centers of LA, New York, and Boston.

EatStreet, a food delivery platform headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, has an even more regional focus. You’ll find them in almost every town in Wisconsin, and in other smaller cities and towns across almost 40 states.

Waitr isn’t available in NY or LA, but you’ll find it as far and wide as Clanton, Alabama, and Pensacola, Arkansas. Other regional partners including Bitesquad and Munchon Eats favor serving small towns and universities, while FoodJets focuses on independent restaurants.

Watch out for news of takeovers by the bigger players should any of these smaller competitors start to get too large and try to compete on a national scale.

Similarities in Australia and Canada

Lying between the US and New Zealand in terms of market size, Canada and Australia, although very different countries in climate, location, and geography, share similarities when it comes to food delivery. Both are serviced by most of the major platforms, while also sustaining a couple of smaller players.

In Canada, you can partner up with Uber Eats, JustEat (as SkipTheDishes), Zomato, and DoorDash, as well as ChowNow, Delivery.com, and CMEOW, which takes care of Canada’s smaller cities such as Hamilton, Halifax, and Waterloo. EASI is available only in Vancouver and is expanding rapidly.

In Australia, there’s even more choice including Uber Eats, Deliveroo, JustEat (via Menulog), Zomato, and DoorDash, as well as Ritual, and EASI.

New Zealand’s homegrown delivery services

As by far the smallest market of the four in question, New Zealand has been somewhat overlooked by the biggest delivery players. This vacuum has allowed a number of smaller local players to share the market, most of which don’t operate in any other markets.

Aukland-focused Order Meal serves the major towns and cities on the North Island as well as Dunedin and Christchurch on the South Island. EASI is in Auckland and Hamilton. FoodNinja operates out of Wellington.

Food on Q is a truly local service that serves the rural areas of Frankton and Shotover and nearby Queenstown in the southern end of the South Island. Gimme (formerly GiveMeBread) operates in Christchurch and surrounding areas on the South Island. DeliverEats operates only in Rotorua while Flamingo has branched out from electric scooters to offer delivery services in the largest NZ cities last year.
